Of Hearths and Peace

Words by a Fireplace

There is a peace tonight. I do not know how to describe it, where it came from or how to quantify it. All I know is that there is peace tonight.

Perhaps its the fire burning in the hearth. It fills me with a nostalgia that I have not borne or felt for ages. The crackling of the fire as wood turns into Charcoal. The red embers glancing through the flame at a cold world that will soon consume them. Soon they will be ash, their fiery past forgotten, Their crackling spirit gone, their silence everlasting. But for now, they fill my room with warmth, and peace and nostalgia. And in the midst of this, I realize I miss you.

Perhaps its that pervasive cold. It sneaks up on you like a leopard in the night. Carried by the wind, silent like an assassin waiting for the opportune moment to strike. It reminds me of many other nights like this. The fire on one hand, a bastion of hope seeking to fight and protect. And the cold, a pure force of nature. The two dance, a fiery dance. Sparks fly and flames blaze away. It is an age-old battle. Familiar to the whole of our species. Perhaps that is why it fascinates me so.

It is on quiet nights like these that I feel the purpose of these letters. I wish to convey my soul and thoughts to you, by digital pen on digital paper. Word by word, thought by thought. I want to sneak into your brain and live there. Peek behind the curtain at the brilliance that is you. Perhaps sneak in an idea or two. I want to whisper into your thoughts. Throw in a small pocket of laughter here and there. I want to challenge you, listen to your arguments as you take me on. I absolutely love it.

If my essence could be distilled into words, I would love for it to be a tome you read. I would love the words to make you smile, to take you through the wild lands of imagination and cast you upon the shores of question. From there, shall you sail the seas of prose and poetry, your sails full, your course being yours to chart. I want to fill your soul with wonder, and widen your eyes with possibility. Oh, I want so much.

For now, I use these words. And the fire in the hearth crackles. And I think of you. And my heart warms up faster than my room. And there is peace.

Yours, Always,

Lawrence
