The Art of the Friday-Night-In

Or how to embrace yourself

Ah, There it is, the glorious weekend ahead. Behind you lies the week, wrapped in all its troubles, and you, the glorious warrior, stride off for that alluring night-cap; The final stop in this week’s journey

But wait…

Maybe this isn’t you… No, not tonight. Perhaps tonight you just want to be by yourself; A solitary moon in a starless night, casting your brilliance into the dark.

Perhaps you wish to find yourself, enjoy the silent paces of introspection. Perhaps you wish to finish that article, that book, that story; That idea that has been lurking in your brain for so long it’ll probably start paying rent soon. Perhaps you wish to get away from it all, the noise, the bustle, the active madness of humanity.

And tonight, I give you a challenge.

Run, hide, flee from it all. Climb into that quiet corner and fall silent. Watch the world pass by. Be by yourself, for yourself. Pick a book, pick a story, and disappear. Fall into the spinning abyss of thought. Be carried away by the whirlwind of ideas, swept by the winds of introspective emotion.

Seek the Silence

And in the silence shall you find the whispers of your deepest thought calling to you. Their shy voices unobstructed by the static of daily life. Their slow songs of quiet thought leaking through the walls of habit, reaching out to your core, your soul. In their voices shall you find peace and serenity. In their words shall you find the dreams of times past and the hopes of the future.

In the darkness shall you find yourself. Not just you but every you. Every shard of personality shaped by the waves of time. Every smile, thought and memory imbued with colour. Every choice imbued with the vague clarity of hindsight.

And perhaps there, in the midst of you,You might see yourself, meet yourself, be yourself.
